Prince William, like his brother Harry, is known to love a good party but he was nowhere in sight for his own girlfriend's birthday bash.

William was noticeably absent from Kate Middleton's 26th birthday celebrations on Wednesday but the woman many tip to become his bride did not let his no-show hold her back.

Kate managed to fit in a party at her plush Chelsea flat with family and friends and then headed out for dinner before moving on to a club, where she stayed well into the small hours.

(They are hotly tipped to soon become engaged but Kate flies solo on her birthday while William takes to the skies on a pilot training course in Lincolnshire)

Presumably eager to extend her birthday as long as possible, she ended up staying out until almost 3am with her younger sister Pippa.

No doubt the two Princes would have been proud of her efforts - although for her at least there were no drunken pictures nor any rucking on the pavement with the paparazzi.

She instead looked enviously elegant throughout the evening, wearing a fitted cream, calf-length coat with large black buttons and pointed, black high heels.

Sister Pippa looked strikingly similar - albeit in a red checked, calf-length coat and dangly earrings and sporting a deep tan in comparison to her sister's English rose complexion.

Their parents Carole and Michael joined the pair for dinner at Tom Aitkens restaurant in Chelsea but left their daughters to it at midnight when they dropped them off at Kitts Club in Sloane Square.

The club is a favourite haunt of the Sloane set and celebrities such as Noel Gallagher and Girls Aloud.

It was during Kate's temporary split from William last year that saw Pippa become a regular fixture at her sister's side and the pair looked closer than ever last night despite her reunion with the Prince.

One of the rumoured reasons for the break-up last April was William's dedication to his army career, to the exclusion of his relationship with Kate.

And true to form, he could not make her birthday because he has just begun a four-month Royal Air Force pilot training course at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire.

But clearly this did little to dint Kate's party spirit, as she was all smiles on the night - giving a cheeky grin to waiting photograpers at the Chelsea restarant and then a huge, broad smile on leaving Kitts.

It might just end up being her last birthday as a single girl - with the rumour mill once again rumbling that an imminent royal engagement is on the cards.

Speculation has been fuelled by reports that Kate is to be assigned her own bodyguards to assimilate her further into the royal household.

It is thought she will now be guarded 24-hours a day in her own right, instead of only having round-the-clock protection when she is with William.
